Weatherization
Weatherize Your Home for Safety, Comfort and Savings
With energy costs rising along with a heightened concern for the environment, it pays to take a close look at how you can “weatherize” your home to keep your family safe and comfortable, while reducing your energy usage.
Weatherization is the process of taking measures to improve energy efficiency in a home. These may include ceiling, wall and floor insulation; closing heat-escaping gaps by caulking, weather stripping, window and door replacement; and the addition of insulated siding.
First Step: A Home Energy Audit
We begin the weatherization process by inspecting your home for energy “leaks.” A professionally trained technician will perform an on-site Home Energy Audit using Minneapolis Blower Door and Infrared Camera to identify faulty air sealing areas, insulation needs, and inspect heating and duct systems for safety and efficiency. We will then issue a report indicating which areas of your home are in need of changes or upgrades in order to make it more energy efficient.
What Can You Do to Reduce Energy Use and Costs?
Depending on the condition of your home, we may recommend some of the following weatherization work:
- Installing insulation in walls, floors, and ceilings, around ducts and pipes, around water heaters, and near the foundation and sill.
- Replacing older windows with low-energy, double- or triple-glazed windows.
- Replacing old drafty doors with tightly sealing, foam-core doors.
- Repairing or replacing damaged roofing and flashing.
- Installing insulated siding.
- Sealing bypasses (cracks, gaps, holes) around doors, windows, pipes and wiring that penetrate the ceiling and floor, and other areas with high potential for heat loss, using caulk, foam sealant, weather-stripping and electrical receptacle gaskets to reduce infiltration.
- Sealing recessed lighting fixtures that can leak large amounts of air into unconditioned attic space.
- Sealing air ducts, which can account for 20% of heat loss, using fiber-reinforced mastic (not duct tape, which is not suitable for this purpose)
- Installing new gutters, gutter covers and downspout extensions, to protect your home from rainwater and storm water runoff.
Tax Savings May Apply
Many home weatherization projects are eligible for the federal government’s 30% Energy Tax Credit. This means that you could realize substantial cost reductions on your home improvement project, even before you start saving money on your monthly energy bills!
