Soundproofing a Room/New England Home Show

Anechoic chamberSoundproofing a room can be one of the best ways to make yourself, neighbors, and family more comfortable in the home. A well insulated home provides sound protection behind the scenes. Many homes lack interior insulation or suffer from poor initial construction, and a "loud house" can be the result. Even a home with extremely thick drywall is not sound proof.

How are rooms soundproofed?

There are extreme measures to secure an interior space from sound, but most are not practical outside of music studios. It is important to know most homes no matter how well insulated will meet standards like spaces with ridged foam like in the picture, called "Anechoic Chambers".

What can be done in your home?

Blocking Sound Within the Home
  • Blown in insulation is one of the most effective method of insulation room to room within your home.

  • Fiberglass insulation may be in the walls already, but fiberglass is a very poor sound minimizing material.

  • Newer insulation products like blown in insulation will provide a great deal of sound resistance and keep your home much more energy efficient in the process.

Blocking Sound Outside of the Home
  • Although insulation can help with sounds escaping and entering the home from the exterior, it is also important to check your doors and windows for insulating properties.

  • House windows can be damaged by the elements and overtime can wear our. It is important to find the best replacement windows possible (look for the warranty).

  • Triple pane windows will give the most sound protection as they are the most insulated on a residential level. Check out the pros and cons between old wooden windows and the newer vinyl replacement windows.
