Job Stories From Salem, MA
Asphalt and Rubber Roofing Replacement in Salem, MA

Our client in Salem called us about some roof repairs on their home.  They needed a new asphalt roof on one side of the home, and new rubber roofing on the other, in addition to some other small repairs.

The first thing the crew needed to do was lay down a tarp in order to protect both the sides of the home and windows, and also any plants, shrubs, or trees that were at the base of the home.  After making sure that the home and grounds were protected, the crew got to work on removing the old rubber roofing and asphalt shingles from the home.  Once all the old roofing material had been removed, the crew needed to assess the condition of the roof deck under the roofing.  On this home, there was minimal rot damage, so the crew did not need to replace much of the roof deck, just a very small section on the rubber roof side.

From here, the roofing jobs differ slightly.  On the rubber roofing side, the crew needed to install recovery board to help with insulation and water-proofing and on the asphalt side they installed the Owens Corning Ice and Water Barrier 6' up from the base, 18" inches up from the fascia board, and 3' around any valleys or vents.

After installing all of the water-proofing material, the next thing that needed to be done was installing the drip edges to both sections of roof above the fascia boards and along the rakes. This is to keep water away from the roof deck and ensure that it runs into the gutter system rather than under the shingles where it could cause rot damage.  The crew then needed to install the starter shinges on the asphalt side of the roof.  The starter shingles come complete with additional adhesive in order to stay in place during any heavy winds.

After that, the crew began to install the roofing onto each side. On the asphalt side the crew puts in 6 nails per shingle to ensure it is nailed down securely and is as water-tight as possible. On the rubber side, the crew needed to lay the rubber roofing down and glue it 8" up the sidewall.  In order to do this, the crew first needed to cut the siding away, install 8" of foamboard where they cut the siding, and then glue the rubber roofing to the foamboard.  After installing the rubber roofing up the side of the home, a termination bar needed to be added and flashed just above the 8" of installation.  The termination bar was installed to keep the water away from the roofing and prevent it from dripping under it and onto the recovery board where it could potentially cause rot issues.

The crew also needed to repair the clapboards just above the termination bar.  The old clapboards were rotting away and chipping at the edges, so to help keep the water from sliding under them or in between the cracks and dripping under the roofing, the crew decided to take preventative measures and simply replace the clapboard.

Finally, the crew needed to clean up the job site.  They used a leaf-blower to clean off the roof, cleaned out any gutters in the work area, and finally used a magnetic rake to clean the area under the two sections of roof to ensure any stray nails were picked up.  The client's leak was repaired and the crew headed back to the showroom.

Vinyl Replacement Windows on Salem Church

Our salesman Sean went out to one of our repeat customers in Salem to check on wooden windows in need of replacement. A&A Services previously installed various windows for this customer, as well as an entry door. The windows in question are on the basement level of a beautiful church in the downtown Salem area. Being wooden windows in such close proximity to the ground, they have rotted over the years due to exposure to weather and debris. Failed basement windows can ultimately lead to water entering the basement which leads to all kinds of expensive problems in the future.

The product Sean and this customer elected to replace the wooden windows with is a Sunrise Vanguard Vinyl product, which will provide the basement with enhanced security and protection from the elements, while still preserving the visual appeal of the church's architecture.

Replacement Windows in Salem, MA

Here is a before and after example of some windows we've installed in Salem. These windows were installed by the willows and are subject to heavy salt water and wind. We used a fiberglass-reinforced vinyl sunrise window to make sure that that our lifetime warranty could be honored. In this particular case we took 2 double hung and one picture window in the middle and turned it into a seamless 3-double-hung section of windows.Replacement windows are one of our specialties. We use some of the highest quality most energy efficient materials you can find and all of our staff have had years of training under their belt. All of windows meet or exceed energy star requirements.

2012 Fall Replacement Window Installation in Beverly MA - Before/After

Here is a few before and after pictures of a house that has tons of light let into it right near the Kernwood bridge on the north shore. We install wood grain vinyl replacement windows that look just like the real thing. When we install windows that we protect your home from the installation and always leave the job site just as clean as we found it (or cleaner). In the picture below you can see our installer carrying a white vinyl window towards the parlor, which is featured in the picture below this one. Here we are in the parlor area of the home, and unlike the other portions of the home, this room has white framed windows, the most popular choice. Each one of the windows pictured in this article has had insulation fitted between it and the frame, and these windows will keep this room cozy this upcoming winter. Again, even if the window itself has high energy saving ratings, it would mean nothing without proper installation from a company that cares. Not every window we install is a standard issue up and down double hung. In fact all around the Beverly, Salem, and Danvers areas you find historic houses with unique features that you won't see anywhere else. Standardization in the housing industry didn't occur until much later than many of the houses we work on. We were surprised this window didn't have warped vinyl in it, but it was only a matter of time. Our fiberglass reinforced Sunrise Windows are going to make sure these horizontal slider windows won't fail under the wide opening. This shows you a good example of how closely we can match wood grains. Staining wood is one of the hardest things to do in the first place, and having a finish like this that won't fade over time is important. As far as the energy efficiency of these windows is concerned, they are double pane windows with an R-value of .29.

Hi, we have a gutter on the back of the house that we would like to drain to the opposite side, It currently drains onto the sidewalk and water pools there. in winter that freezes. In the summer, we are currently "rigging" additional drainage system of collapsible drains to get the water out to the yard, where it can be absorbed by the lawn...not sit on the hot top to evaporate. Its not pretty, nor is it safe, as this all crosses the bottom of the deck stairs Would like to know if we could make changes necessary to fix this "problem". Thank you, Laura
