A Danvers Roofing Project That Revealed a Hidden Attic Problem

As a trusted Danvers roofing contractor, A&A Services has seen every type of roof issue imaginable. But one recent project in Danvers stands out because it shows how attic conditions can quietly damage a home long before any exterior signs appear.

A Routine Roof Inspection With an Unexpected Discovery

The job began like many others. We arrived to inspect the roof, checking for the usual signs of wear on the shingles, flashing, and exterior surfaces. But roof problems aren’t always visible from the outside, which is why we always take the extra step of entering the attic.

Once inside, we discovered the source of the homeowner’s long-term moisture issues. Both bathroom exhaust fans were venting directly into the attic instead of to the outdoors. While this is something we see often, it can create serious problems when warm, humid air is trapped with no way to escape.

Mold Growth Hidden Beneath the Roof Deck

As we continued the inspection, it became clear what had been happening. Nearly half of the roof deck was covered in mold. The trapped bathroom moisture had created the perfect environment for mold and mildew to thrive. From the outside, the roof looked fine. Inside, the structure was quietly deteriorating.

This type of hidden damage is more common than many homeowners realize. Ventilation problems can cause major issues even when shingles appear intact.

Fixing the Damage and Correcting the Ventilation

The first step was removing all the mold-covered plywood. We replaced the compromised sections of the roof deck with new, clean material to restore the roof’s structural integrity.

But replacing the plywood alone wasn’t enough. To prevent the problem from returning, we needed to correct the attic ventilation. We installed new broom vents designed specifically for bathroom exhaust. These vents direct moist air outdoors so it never lingers inside the attic again.

This simple but effective fix stopped the moisture buildup at its source and ensured the home would stay protected long term.

Why Attic Inspections Matter

This project is a reminder that the biggest roofing problems often start where homeowners rarely look. People tend to think about their roofs only when they see a leak or missing shingles, but ventilation issues can cause damage long before anything appears on the exterior.

A proper roof inspection includes both the outside and the attic. It’s the only way to catch hidden moisture issues, mold growth, or structural deterioration before they become expensive repairs.

As a Danvers roofing contractor committed to protecting local homes, A&A Services encourages homeowners to schedule regular inspections. Addressing small problems early is the best way to avoid major damage down the road.
