What Happened to NewPro, and What It Means for Homeowners

A smiling person in a bright blue shirt with company logos sits against a plain white background, conveying a friendly and approachable demeanor.

When I first heard that NewPro had suddenly shut its doors, I honestly couldn’t believe it. For decades, they were one of the biggest and most respected home improvement companies in New England. I’ve competed with them for years and always considered them a strong and professional competitor.

So when the news broke, my heart immediately went out to their employees and customers. Imagine showing up to work one day and finding out your job is gone. Or being a homeowner who’s already put down a deposit and now has no idea what happens next. It’s heartbreaking.

This isn’t about criticizing NewPro. They had a long and successful history, and I have nothing but respect for the team that built the company. But I do think there’s an important lesson here for every homeowner thinking about hiring a contractor.

The Private Equity Problem

A few years back, NewPro was bought by a private equity firm called Renovo. That means the company was no longer owned by the family who built it or by people who lived in the community. Instead, it became part of a larger group of investors focused on financial growth.

These kinds of deals have been happening a lot lately. Private equity firms are buying up local home improvement companies across the country in roofing, windows, siding, HVAC, and more. They merge them together, put new executives in place, and try to scale the business to increase profits.

But here’s what I’ve learned after more than 40 years in this business: you can’t run a home improvement company from a spreadsheet. You have to understand the people, the work, the homes, and the trust that comes with every project. That’s something you only learn from being on the ground, doing the work, and caring about the outcome.

A Simple Question Every Homeowner Should Ask

If you’re planning a home improvement project, whether it’s new windows, siding, or a roof, here’s one simple question to ask your contractor:

Who owns this company?

It sounds basic, but it can tell you a lot. Many companies that look local on the surface are actually owned by national groups or private investors. They might have a strong brand and slick marketing, but when things go wrong, you may find yourself dealing with a corporate office hundreds of miles away instead of someone who knows your name and cares about your home.

Local ownership still matters. A small, community-based company lives and dies by its reputation. They pick up the phone when you call. They care if something goes wrong. And they know that doing right by one customer means earning the trust of the next one.

Final Thoughts

The home improvement world is changing fast, and not always for the better. Big companies with big budgets are entering markets that used to be run by local family businesses. But this is still a people business. It’s built on trust, relationships, and doing the right thing for your neighbors.

That’s how we’ve run A&A Services for more than 40 years. We’re proud to still be locally owned and focused on the same thing we’ve always cared about: doing great work for great people.

If you’ve been affected by the NewPro closure or just want advice on your next project, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to listen, help, and make sure your home is taken care of the right way.

I chose A&A Services for a roof replacement. Rick came out to provide the initial estimate and from then on guided me through the whole process. He was great to work with. No pressure at any time and I was notified every step of the way. No surprises. Aurel and the roofing crew were great too! My roof looks beautiful and more importantly, my house is dry inside! Highly recommend!!

A&A did a very nice job at my house replacing the gutters and downspouts and the main roof and many smaller ones and also the garage roof. They came on time, did a professional job and cleaned up nice when the project was complete. I would definitely use them again.
