The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently released a report from its software-based life-cycle analysis tool called BEES, or Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability. In the study, it analyzed impact categories to help better understand vinyl siding’s effects on climate change and the overall environment as compared to other claddings.

It revealed that vinyl siding beat other known exterior siding materials like cedar board, fiber cement and brick and mortar in various categories. For instance, cedar board has a 42% higher smog impact than vinyl siding. Garnering better environmental impact scores (EIS) over these other products, vinyl cladding was proven to be a better choice for green building.
