I arrived at the house in Marblehead for a routine roof inspection. The homeowner was initially hesitant when I explained I wanted to check both the roof and the attic.

Most contractors just look from the ground, but we do a more thorough inspection. “Why do you need to go in my attic?” she asked. I explained that I wanted to check the roof deck from below to identify any potential issues before starting the job. I told her it’s better to know about any problems upfront, so there are no surprises later.

Some contractors give a low estimate and then find additional work once they start. She seemed skeptical at first, but I took the time to walk her through our process. When I went into the attic, I found the roof deck was in pretty bad shape. Nobody had pointed this out to her before. I took some photos to show her the condition.

When I explained the full extent of the work needed, she was surprised. My estimate was higher than the other quotes she’d received, but that was because we found significant issues that other contractors missed. I showed her our reference list and explained exactly what needed to be done.

After thinking it over, she decided to hire us. She appreciated that we took the time to explain everything and weren’t just trying to sell her the most expensive job possible. We completed the work, replacing the roof deck and doing a thorough job.

She was happy with the result and has since hired us for a few other projects. For me, it’s always about helping the customer understand their home’s needs.
